In Nathaniel's PhD, he conducted a language/literacy intervention study with young offenders. Nathaniel teaches into the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) degree with a focus on language and literacy.
Nathaniel is interested in the dynamic interaction between oral language and literacy across the lifespan, and the differences between oral and written language in the classroom and beyond. Understandings from linguistics, phonetics, and developmental science underpin his focus on language and literacy teaching.
Nathaniel sees collaboration between academic disciplines and practising professionals as the mechanism through which we can innovate the teaching of literacy skills in the 21st Century.
In addition to teaching, Nathaniel is part of the team producing the Literacy Teaching Resource for the Victorian Department of Education, a collaboration between Early Childhood and the Language and Literacy Group in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, led by Dr Carmel Sandiford and A/Prof Patricia Eadie.
