DR Pietro Procopio

  • Dr Pietro Procopio started his working career as an astrophysicist. After obtaining a Bachelor degree in Astronomy from the University of Bologna in 2005, he won a scholarship that funded his enrolment in the international doctorate program jointly offered by the University of Ferrara and the University of Paris 7 - Denis Diderot. Simultaneously he joined the international collaboration, funded by the European Space Agency, which managed to build and successfully launch the Planck satellite in 2009. The mission gave the astrophysics community the chance to observe the ‘first light of the Universe’ with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. In 2009, he obtained his PhD in astro-particle physics and started working at the National Institute for Astrophysics in Bologna as a research fellow. In 2012 he joined the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne. He became a member of the Murchison Widefield Array project, an international collaboration involving the construction of a radio-telescope in Western Australia for the observation of the epoch during which the first stars and galaxies formed. Since 2016 Pietro has joined the breast cancer research group led by Dr. Carolyn Nickson at the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH). He joined the Cancer Research Division at Cancer Council NSW in 2017. He is currently involved in a variety of projects including: - The expansion and further development of a clinical model for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment across Australia; - The application of machine learning techniques in the context of personalised risk model for breast cancer; - The development and the validation of automated software (AutoDensity) as well as the exploration of alternative techniques for mammographic density measurements; - The development of an automated pipeline for the systematic processing of large-scale database of mammogram images.
