  • Dr Ben Cleveland is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne, where he is Associate Director of the Learning Environments Applied Research Network (LEaRN). His current research activity includes acting as Lead Chief Investigator for the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project, ‘Building Connections: Schools as Community Hubs’ (2018-2021) and actively contributing as a Chief Investigator to the ARC Linkage Project ‘Innovative Learning Environments + Teacher Change’ (2016-2019). He recently lead a three-year program of learning environment evaluation for Catholic Education Melbourne and Catholic Diocese of Parramatta and reviewed the Victorian Department of Education and Training’s school area standards, resulting in significant policy updates. Ben was Research Manager for the ARC Linkage Project, ‘Evaluating 21st Century Learning Environments’ (2013-2017) and led the development of a ‘Translational Brief’ for the Footscray Learning Precinct. Ben teaches a range of cross-disciplinary subjects including Innovative Spaces and Pedagogy, Human Environments Relations, and Building the Brief: People, Process, Place. He also supervises a growing number of PhD and Masters students in the field of Learning Environments Research. As a consultant, Ben was the lead Educational Planner for the 15 Victorian state schools procured via Public Private Partnership in 2015-2018. He has also consulted on the Victoria School Building Authority's 2020 and 2021 schools programs and other school design projects in Victoria, New South Wales, South Ausatralia, Northern Territory, and New Zealand. He is immediate past Chair of the Victorian Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia.

Supervision Statement

  • Dr Ben Cleveland supervises a number of PhD and Masters students in the field of Learning Environments Research. The Higher Degree Research students he supervises often come from Architecture and/or Education backgrounds. Ben's affliation with the Learning Environments Applied Research Network (LEaRN), of which he is the Associate Director, creates ample opportunities for connections to be made between the disciplines of architecture and education - towards establishing deep understandings of the relationships between space and teaching and learning.
