  • Dr Sofia Colabella is an architect and Lecturer in ‘Construction Technology in Architecture’ at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of the University of Melbourne. In 2006 she got a PhD in ‘Architectural Technology’ with a thesis entitled ‘Innovative uses of small wooden laths in architecture’. Sofia is a co-founder of ‘Gridshell.it’, a company specialised in the design and construction of performative timber architecture. She is also co-founder of ‘CMMKM Architecture and Design’, an architecture practice based in Italy, and focused on applying sustainability concepts to contemporary living. Since 2006, she has been writing research papers for international conferences and journals in the fields of: (1) digital tools for active-bending architecture; (2) Design & Construction; (3) making and innovative uses of traditional materials and technologies. During the last 15 years, she has also been working and publishing on the following research and design fields: (1) interior design, (2) timber design, (3) technology of architecture and tectonic cultures and (4) gridshell design. In 2016-2017 she was employed at the ‘Structural Xploration Lab’, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) as visiting Scientific Partner. Her role was to provide a novel approach on the feasibility of reuse for structural purposes, particularly the reuse of discarded high-tech sports equipment. Sofia has also worked as Casual Lecturer at the University of Naples Federico II. She is a member of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) and has been a reviewer for the International Journal of Space Structures.
