Heather Young

Heather Young received her PhD in Zoology in 1989 from the University of Melbourne. Her first postdoctoral position was at the Vision, Touch and Hearing Research Centre at the University of Queensland in the laboratory of Dr David Vaney where she examined retinal circuitry.

Her second postdoctoral position was in the laboratory of Prof John Furness at the University of Melbourne, where she used electron microscopy to examine circuitry within the enteric nervous system. After being awarded an NHMRC RD Wright Fellowship in 1994, she started an independent laboratory and switched to enteric nervous system development. She was awarded an NHMRC Fellowship in 1997, and promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 2001. Prof Young's current research is focused on the mechanisms controlling the development of the enteric nervous system and the potential of cell therapy for treating enteric neuropathies.
