Pete Millwood is a historian of the Chinese world's international and transnational relations, particularly with the United States.

His first book, Improbable Diplomats: How Ping-Pong Players, Musicians, and Scientists Remade US-China Relations, reveals how a diverse cast of Chinese and Americans outside of government played a critical, but to date overlooked, role in the US-China rapprochement. Based on new sources collected in more than a dozen official, non-governmental, and private archives, from across the United States and China, the book was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. It won the Richard T. Arndt Prize for an Outstanding Work on Cultural Diplomacy and was a finalist for Southern Methodist University’s Center for Presidential History Book Prize.

Millwood's research has also been published in Diplomatic History, Cold War History, and the Journal of Contemporary History, and his writing and research have been featured in the Washington Post, History Today, and on ABC and BBC radio. He completed a DPhil in History at St Antony's College, Oxford in 2018, during which he also held fellowships at Peking University and the Library of Congress. He then held postdoctoral fellowships at Tsinghua University, the University of Oxford, and the London School of Economics. Before being appointed at Melbourne, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at the University of Hong Kong. His second book project, a global history of Taiwan's democratisation, is supported by an ARC DECRA fellowship.
