Professor David Hare is a graduate of the University of Melbourne, subsequently undertaking post-graduate studies at the University of Melbourne and at Guy’s Hospital in London. He has been the Coordinator of the Cardiovascular Research Domain for the University of Melbourne and was the recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Scientist Medal of the Austin Research Foundation.
He directs a basic Molecular and Vascular Laboratory and runs Heart Failure, Exercise and Psychosocial Clinical Research Groups, while undertaking collaborative research in Cardiac Surgery, Diabetes, Renal and Respiratory Medicine.
He has had a major research interest in depression and cardiac patients having, after physician training, also trained in psychiatry.
He has a long-standing interest in the primary and secondary prevention of heart disease, an interest that included an appointment as Medical Director, National Heart Foundation of Australia (Vic. Div.) from 1983-1990. Since 1990, he has been Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention for Austin Health in Australia.
Clinically, he works as a Senior Cardiologist at Austin Health where he practices in General Cardiology and is Director of Heart Failure Services. He is the Director of Research in the Department of Cardiology and is currently also the Research Integrity Advisor for Austin Health in Melbourne, Australia.
