I have completed my medical degree at University of Punjab in 1987 and since then have worked as an intern and medical resident at various hospitals in Australian and overseas. I commenced my Specialist Registrar training in neurology and rehabilitation in various hospitals across Victoria and completed Fellow of Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine Royal Australasian College of Physician in 2001.

In 2009 I completed my Doctor of Medicine from University of Melbourne, titled: Rehabilitation in Multiple sclerosis.

I have spent more than 13 years working in neurology and rehabilitation field and am currently the Associate Professor and Principal Fellow, Department of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne & Melbourne Health; Director of the Rehabilitation services and Head of Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, Melbourne Health since 2003; and Associate Professor (Research), School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine Monash University (since 2012). I represent 9 public hospital networks at the Clinical Leadership Group for the Care of the Older People, Department of Health Victoria. Currently, I hold a number of other international and national academic senior research Fellow appointments, including Representative for the Western Pacific Region World Health Organization (WHO), International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Research Branch; executive member of the WHO International Disaster Committee and Honorary Fellow of the Melbourne EpiCentre and National Ageing and Research Institute. Currently I hold a number of international academic research appointments, which include: Cochrane Multiple Sclerosis Review group, Psychosocial Influences upon Chronic Disease Outcomes across Europe (PICDOE), University of Leeds; Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine; (AFRM); Department of Health; Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW); Western and Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (WCMICS); World Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine; National Stroke Hospital Network; Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (RACP) and others.

My personal research interests are in clinical, translational science and health services research in neuro-rehabilitaion and other health care areas, which spans in clinical, academic & research domains. Being a researcher and clinician, provides the ideal opportunities to conduct high quality research and translate evidence-based findings into practice for improved patient outcomes. I have been involved and overseen various major research projects and have published more than 180 articles in prominent academic journals. These include 13 systematic reviews (10 Cochrane reviews); 5 RCTs and 10 book chapters: Most of my work has led to establishment of comprehensive multidisciplinary care for neurological cohorts, which provide evidence based, patient oriented quality care aimed at reducing disability and enhancing participation. These programs have now been implemented nationally and internationally. My research findings have led to translation of research outputs and embedded in clinical practice and policy development. These findings are also incorporated in various evidence-based clinical protocols and practice guidelines; and teaching materials used by the University of Melbourne and Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine; and consumer organisations. I lead a team of multidisciplinary clinicians and researchers and provide research methods support. I currently supervise 6 PhD students. I am currently a reviewer for 10 medical journals.
Further, I am a strong advocate for evidence-base practices and integrated care for persons with disability. I am a regular presenter at International and local educational conferences, seminars/programmes for translation of research evidence into practice for improved and sustainable clinical practice change.
