Sam Yuen

 

Dr Yuen is recognized both nationally and internationally for his research on solid waste management with specific interests in bioreactor landfills, waste containment systems, leachate recirculation, landfill hydrology and landfill gas management. He served the industry for over 12 years practising as a consulting engineer in a wide range of geotechnical and environmental projects before commencing his academic career with the University of Melbourne in 1996.

He has been appointed a Senior Fellow (honorary) following his retirement from the Department of Infrastructure engineering. Below are some highlights of Dr Yuen’s contribution to the profession and research:

  • Research Team Leader of the national Australian Alternative Cap Program (A-ACAP) co-funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) (2006 to 2011).
  • Landfill Aftercare and Management Expert Advisory Group appointed by EPA Victoria providing technical advice on potential environmental impacts, appropriate mitigation and monitoring programs (2010 to 2014).
  • Technical Committee CE9 for the drafting of the Australian Standard AS1289: Testing of Soils for Engineering Purposes (2000 - 2016).
  • International assessor for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada grant applications (2011 to 2015).
  • Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Biofilter Technical Working Group for the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, (2013 to 2015).
  • Course Advisory Committee, School of Engineering and Science, Victoria University (2011 to 2014).
  • Technical Committee CE9-001 (2006) for the Soils Testing Handbook (HB1600) produced by Standards Australia.
  • Chief investigator of the first Australian Phytocap landfill test cell in Wollert landfill, Victoria funded by Hanson Group (2004 to 2008).
  • Chief investigator of the first Australian full-scale bioreactor landfill trial in Lyndhurst Landfill, Victoria funded by BFI (1994 to 1999).
