Jon is the NHMRC Peter Doherty Fellow and Head of the Proteomics & Calcium Biology Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He is also Deputy Director (Research) with the Melbourne Research Unit for Facial Disorders at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Melbourne, and the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.

In addition, Jon is a founder and Director of a biotech startup, and is a founding member of a translational research platform called The D3 Group. Jon’s research focuses on the molecular pathogenesis of developmental orofacial defects, with particular emphasis on teeth and bone. He has expertise in molecular, cellular, and biophysical approaches for the analysis of clinical specimens and animal models of disease. Microsample proteomics and biomarker discovery constitute a methodological cornerstone. His research has contributed to the understanding of various paediatric orofacial conditions including cleft lip & palate, orthodontic root loss, and a widespread developmental dental defect termed molar hypomineralisation (MH). Recent breakthroughs on MH have led to projects focussing on novel therapeutic approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately prevention of the condition. Jon holds a PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from the University of Melbourne, a Masters in Molecular & Computational Biology and a Bachelors degree in Biochemistry (both from the University of Otago), and a Graduate Certificate in Commercialisation from the Melbourne Business School.
