Nicolas’ research interests include labour economics, tax and transfer policies, homelessness, welfare economics, development economics, microsimulation modelling and micro-macro modelling. Nicolas is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Melbourne Institute Tax and Transfer Simulator (MITTS).

Nicolas currently holds the position of Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne, which he joined in 2007.

His research has been published in journals such as Oxford Economic Papers, Journal of Urban Economics and Fiscal Studies. His recent article on income redistribution in Australia won the 2015 Economic Record Best Paper Prize.

Nicolas has also undertaken commissioned research for a large number of government agencies and private sector organisations including the World Bank, the European Commission, the Australian Department of Jobs and Small Business, the Commonwealth Treasury, the New Zealand Treasury and the Australian National Centre for Vocational Education Research.
