Prof Bebbington is a Professorial Fellow of the L.H.Martin Institute and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Melbourne, Emeritus Professor of the University of Adelaide and a Visiting Professor of the National Academy of Education Administration in China. He was Ormond Professor of Music at the University 1991-2007, Dean of the Faculty of Music 1992-2005 and later acting Dean of the Faculty of the VCA and Music.

A Pro-Vice Chancellor 2006-09 and then Deputy Vice Chancellor (University Affairs) at the University 2009-12, he was Vice Chancellor of the University of Adelaide 2012-17. A musicologist and conductor, he studied at the University of Melbourne, Columbia University and the City University of New York as a Fulbright Scholar and Welsford Smithers Scholar. He holds masters degrees in Arts, Music and Philosophy and his PhD was for a thesis "The Orchestral Conducting Practice of Richard Wagner." A noted lecturer, he won the University's Barbara Falk Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Humanities in 2005, and an ACLT Citation for “30 years of outstanding teaching” in 2008. His publications include the Oxford Companion to Australian Music, A Dictionary of Australian Music (OUP) and editions of Haydn (Bärenreiter) and J.G and C.H. Graun (Garland). On university leadership, teaching and strategic planning he has contributed articles to Times Higher Education and appeared at conferences in Australia, the US, China, and Singapore. His board positions include terms as Chair of AMEB Ltd and AMEB (Vic) Ltd, Chair of Meanjin Ltd, and Chair of Music Committees for the Australia Council. He was a founding board member of ANAM. He was Deputy Chair of Universities Australia 2013-16, Chair of the SA Vice Chancellors Committee and Chair of the SA Tertiary Admissions Centre, 2013-16.
