Professor Tan and his group of scientists are interested in keeping neurons alive after brain injury from stroke or trauma. They recently discovered a natural protein in brain cells that can keep neurons alive during stress.

This protein, called Ndfip1, is also important for protecting cells from cancer development. Professor Tan and his group are urgently engaged in finding a drug that can increase levels of Ndfip1 for use in human trials.

Professor Tan was born in Malaysia where he trained as a dentist. He subsequently studied for a D Phil degree from Oxford University and worked for Nobel Laureate Gerald Edelman at Rockefeller University in New York. Professor Tan is presently appointed as NH&MRC Senior Principal Research Fellow. For his research activities, Professor Tan was awarded the 1997 Amgen Australia Award.
