Paul Umina

Paul Umina completed his undergraduate studies at La Trobe University where he was awarded a BSc(Hons) in 1999. He then obtained his PhD in Ecological Genetics and Biochemistry at La Trobe University in 2003.

Paul held a postdoctoral research position at Monash University, before joining the School of BioSciences at The University of Melbourne. He was awarded a Melbourne Enterprise Fellowship in 2019.

Paul's work strikes a balance between innovative research, engagement and commercial application. He has conducted a diverse array of field and laboratory-based research on ecological, molecular and environmental management issues. Paul leads several national projects and has made several important discoveries, including the way numerous insects reproduce, discovering insecticide resistance in crop pests, and identifying natural ways to control insect pests using beneficial insects. His research has significantly advanced the way other scientists and researchers approach pest management in Australia, particularly in the grains industry.

In addition to research, Paul has devoted considerable effort improving the communication and translation of research findings into practical and valuable outcomes. He has engaged in a series of innovative and very effective knowledge transfer initiatives, with the objective of seeing scientific findings being applied by industry. Paul's desire in seeing the results of research efforts implemented by industry and government led him to found cesar pty ltd. cesar is a science based company that combines leading science and consultancy to provide practical and innovative solutions in agricultural pest control, biosecurity and wildlife conservation.
