Associate Professor Wei Qi Fan is a Melbourne trained consultant paediatrician and neonatologist. She graduated from the medical school of Wuhan University (founded in 1889, a top university in China) with First Class Honours in Medicine and Surgery in 1982.

In 1988 A/Prof Fan won a WHO Fellowship which enabled her to do post graduate training in neonatology at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne from 1989 to 1990. Subsequently she continued her neonatal and paediatric training at Mercy Hospital for Women, Royal Women’s Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital. Additionally she completed a PhD in neonatal medicine at Monash Medical Research Institute under professor Adrian Walker and Professor Victor Yu (Monash University) between 1993 and 1997. Her PhD research addressed the important clinical problem of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). She demonstrated for the first time that nitric oxide plays a powerful protective role in the developing intestine, with the most critical development period being preterm, when the frequency of NEC is maximal, and the most vulnerable tissue being the small intestine, where the vulnerability to NEC is greatest. She became a fellow of Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in 2003.A/Prof Fan has been working at the northern hospital (TNH) as a consultant paediatrician and neonatologist for more than 15 years. She is an Associate Professor in paediatrics at the University of Melbourne - Paediatric Academic Lead/CAH Course Coordinator at Northern Clinical School. She has a passion for medical education. She has been awarded Teacher of the Year, every year from 2013 to 2018 at the Northern Clinical School. Her main clinical interest areas include: non-invasive respiratory support for management of neonatal respiratory illness, neonatal sepsis, low birth weight infant nutrition. She has published many academic and clinical research papers/abstracts. She is a supervisor for both graduate (MD course) and post graduate (RACP) research projects.
