Douglas Dow

Douglas Dow joined Melbourne Business School (MBS) in 1993 and is currently Professor of Business Strategy. He was also an Executive Director of the School (MBS Ltd) for nine years from 2011 to 2020, and was the Head of Department for the school for four years from 2013 to 2016.

His research has been published in numerous top tier journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Management, the Journal of International Marketing, and Management International Review.

After a brief foray of publishing in operations management (specifically on TMQ and ISO 9000), his research for the past two decades has focused mainly on international business issues. In particular, on how cross-national differences and within-country diversity influence firm behaviour and performance. His metrics for measuring linguistic and religious distance between countries are widely used in the international business literature. Data relating to these metrics can be accessed via his personal research site: www.dow.net.au.

Douglas teaches both Business Strategy and the Capstone subject on the MBA programs, but has previously taught a range of subjects relating to strategy and international business.

Alongside his publishing and teaching, Douglas is a Consulting Editor with the Journal of International Business Studies (since 2013), and also serves on the editorial review boards for a number of journals including the Journal of World Business, the Global Strategy Journal, and the Australian Journal of Management. Douglas is also the current President of the Australia & New Zealand International Business Academy - www.anziba.org.

In July 2019, Douglas received a Silver Medal from the Academy of International Business for his lifetime publication record in the Journal of International Business Studies. This was a once-off series of awards to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the journal.

In August of 20198, Douglas was awarded the Hans B. Thorelli Award by the American Marketing Association for his article published in the March 2000 issue of the Journal of International Marketing. This award annually recognises an article that has made a significant and long-term contribution to international marketing theory or practice.

Douglas is also a founding member of Pelham Associates - www.pelhamassociates.com.au. Pelham Associates is an independent consulting firm through which a number of MBS and other University of Melbourne faculty channel their private consulting activities.
