Annmarie Brennan

 

AnnMarie Brennan is Senior Lecturer of Design Theory in the Faculty of Architecture, Building, and Planning at the University of Melbourne. She teaches architectural history, theory and design studio subjects and supervises PhD candidates.

Her research focuses on the history and theory of 20th and 21st-century design and architecture, with focused interests into the topics of: media studies and architecture, the political economy of design, machine culture, design utopias and fictions, the history of systems theory in design, and the history of computing in design.
Some of her publications include the Yale School of Architecture journal Perspecta 32: Resurfacing Modernism (MIT Press) and the book Cold War Hothouses: Inventing Postwar Culture from Cockpit to Playboy (Princeton Architectural Press), co-edited with Beatriz Colomina and Jeannie Kim. She has published articles in periodicals such as AA Files, Interstices, Journal of Design History, Design and Culture, Candide: Journal of Architectural Knowledge, and Inflection: Journal of the Melbourne School of Design. She was an editorial board member for the Journal of Architectural Education (2015-2018) and has served as an Associate Editor. She is currently the academic advisor for Inflection: Journal of the Melbourne School of Design.
Dr Brennan curated and organised many exhibitions and conferences on design topics and figures. These include: the 33rd Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand SAHANZ: Gold, 2016, "The Reluctant Master: a symposium to honour the life and work of Romalo Giurgola," at the Melbourne School of Design, "Discipline Building: a brief history of the PhD in Architecture," at the Princeton School of Architecture," "Anna Castelli Ferrieri: Architecture and Design," at the Chicago Anthenaeum, and "Celebrating an Idea: Fifty Years of Perspecta," and "Kaufland: Retail Space in the Former Eastern Germany," both at Yale University.
Dr Brennan received her professional architectural degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. (B.A.1993, B.Arch 1994) and continued her graduate education at Yale University School of Architecture with a Masters of Environmental Design (M.E.D. 2001). At Princeton University she earned a Master of Art in 2003 and her Ph.D. in 2011.
