Associate Professor Tony Verberne graduated from the University of Melbourne with a BSc (Hons) in 1978 and a PhD in Pharmacology in 1982. In 1989 he was awarded a National Heart Foundation Overseas Fellowship and undertook post-doctoral training at the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands and the University of Virginia, USA during the period 1989-1991.

Upon return to Australia he established a laboratory in the University of Melbourne's Department of Medicine, Austin Health and was awarded an NHMRC Research Fellowship. He was an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow until 2007. In 2005 he was awarded a Doctor of Science by the University of Melbourne. He has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology, the British Journal of Pharmacology and Brain Research Bulletin and is currently a member of the editorial board of Autonomic Neuroscience - Basic & Clinical and the American Journal of Physiology. In 2011, along with A/Professor Ida Llewellyn-Smith, he co-edited the second edition of Central Regulation of Autonomic Functions. His research has examined supramedullary circulatory control mechanisms, central cardiovascular reflex pathways as well as central control of pancreatic secretion and brain control glucose homeostasis during hypoglycaemia. In 2010 Associate Professor Tony Verberne's laboratory was the first to describe the properties of brainstem neurons that control adrenaline secretion during hypoglycaemia.
