John Griffiths is a researcher of Renaissance music and culture, especially solo instrumental music from Spain and Italy. He is also an internationally renowned concert performer of the lute, vihuela and early guitars.

His research encompasses broad music-historical studies that include pedagogy, organology, music printing, music in urban society, as well as traditional areas of analysis and criticism. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on the Spanish vihuela, and he is also well known for his work on lute music in Renaissance Naples. He currently serves as the Editor of the Journal of the Lute Society of America. He is currently an honorary professor at the University of Melbourne (Languages and Linguistics) and Monash University (Music) and a research associate at the Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance in Tours.
