Nicholas Low is Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne in the Melbourne School of Design. He convened the first international conference in Australia on Environmental Justice.

He won an international award (AU$4.3 million) from The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations to create a Centre of Excellence in Future Urban Transport. He was joint Director of the Centre, (the Australasian Centre for Governance and Management of Urban Transport – GAMUT) at the University of Melbourne until 2011. He is the author, co-author or editor of 10 books (with national and international publishers), 20 book chapters and 46 articles in national and international refereed journals.He was awarded the Australian Planning Institute National Award for Planning Excellence for his book Australian Urban Planning, New Challenges, New Agendas. And the Harold and Margaret Sprout Award for the best book worldwide on ecological politics, by the International Studies Association (USA) for Justice, Society and Nature, A new exploration of ecological politics.Professor Low was educated at Westminster School (UK) and the Architectural Association, London. He practised as a principal planning officer at the London Borough of Hillingdon before being appointed to the University of Melbourne in 1974. The focus of his research lies at the intersection of three theoretical domains: planning theory, political economy and environmental philosophy. His particular focus is the practical means of implementation of urban change in the direction of social justice and ecological sustainability.His forthcoming book, Being a Planner in Society, for People, Planet, and Place, is to be published by Edward Elgar in 2020.
