Gyorgy Scrinis

 

Gyorgy Scrinis is Associate Professor of Food Politics and Policy in the School of Agriculture and Food, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences.

He completed his PhD in History and Philosophy of Science and Social Theory at the University of Melbourne in 1999.

His research has examined the politics, policy and philosophy of food and nutrition, with a focus on nutrition science, dietary advice, functional foods, food labelling, animal welfare regulations, the role of transnational corporations, alternative proteins and new technologies of production. His book on Nutritionism The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice (Columbia University Press, 2013) develops a critique of nutritional reductionism in nutrition science, dietary advice and food engineering and marketing practices.

Current and past funded projects include:
• a University Hallmark Initiative on 'Future Food' and Alternative Proteins (2019-2021);
• the NHMRC Project Grant ‘Strengthening the Evidence Foundation for Public Health Guidelines’ (2018-2020);
• leading the Australian study on the FAPESP grant 'Consumption of Ultraprocessed Foods, Dietary Nutrient Profile and Obesity in Seven Countries' funded by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation Brazil (FAPESP) (2017-21);
• 'Talking Hunger: Understanding Food Insecurity on Campus' with the Melbourne Social Equity Institute (2020);
• the ARC Discovery Project 'Regulating Food Labels: The Case of Free-Range Food Products in Australia' (2015-2019).
