Helen Suter

I am an Associate Professor of soil science in the School of Agriculture and Food, the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, the University of Melbourne. I hold a doctorate in soil science from the University of Melbourne and have 20 years of research, teaching and consulting experience.

My research focuses on nitrogen efficiency and nitrogenous gas emissions from fertilisers, manures and soils across a range of agricultural industries and climates. This encompasses quantification of nitrogen loss pathways (including quantification of gaseous loss and use of 15N techniques) and investigation of strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, including using nitrogen transformation inhibitor compounds.

My recent research has focused on high input systems: the vegetable and dairy industries. I have led research in Government funded National programs on greenhouse gas emissions and profitable nitrogen strategies, working closely with the fertiliser and dairy industries (~$2 million AUD) as well as being an investigator on numerous research projects (~$6 million AUD). I am interested in the use of new technologies for predicting nutrient needs of pastures including sensors and multispectral imagery.

I am passionate about soil science, agriculture, food security and education of future agricultural scientists. I teach soil science and food security subjects at the undergraduate and masters level, and am currently undertaking a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching. I also supervisors research higher degree students, with collaborations across Universities, Research Institutions and Faculties.

I like to work in multidisciplinary teams to address the challenges facing soils in agricultural systems.
