After completing my clinical training and Chicago post-doctoral position, my research focus has been on improving dementia diagnosis through understanding neurodegenerative mechanisms. For the last decade I have been examining the links between vascular risk, stroke and dementia, and running a cognitive disorders clinic specialising in young and focal onset dementia.
My research is regarded as changing the field: a recent editorial from the Mayo Clinic stated that this work is “endorsing a model of cerebrovascular pathophysiology that represents a major departure from the approach that has dominated the field for the last 40 years”. I have had continuous NHMRC funding for work in Australia since I received my NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship, including project lead, PI and CIA on large projects. Since 2015 I have led the Vascular mechanisms of neurodegeneration Dementia Research Team Grant.
