Janet McGaw is an Associate Professor in Architectural Design in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. She is an award winning registered architect with a PhD by Creative Works from the University of Melbourne.

Janet's research work, teaching and creative practice investigate ways to make urban space more equitable. She explores the relationship between place, identity and health using methods that are discursive, collaborative and sometimes ephemeral. Collaborators have included women who have experienced homelessness and isolation; other artists and architects; and Indigenous communities. Janet led an ARC Linkage Grant: Indigenous Placemaking in Melbourne: Representations, Practices and Creative Research (2010-2014) and is currently an investigator on the Million Minds Project: Bringing family, community, culture and country to the centre of health (2019-2024); is a partner on the project 'Yalinguth', an augmented reality trail through Indigenous Fitzroy, with Storyscape, RMIT, Wurundjeri Corporation, Melbourne Community Indigenous Film Collective and Yarnin' Pictures; and has a pilot project experimenting with bio-materials for building construction. Janet currently coordinates Design Thesis, the final design studio in the Masters of Architecture programme, supervises PhDs, and was the Architecture Pathway coordinator (2015-2019) in the undergraduate degrees and has previously taught Design Research and architectural design studios in both the bachelors and masters degrees.
