Dr. Anthony Lyons is a composer, sound artist and musician whose practice is an interdisciplinary one traversing performance, production, moving image and installation.
His creative output includes works for orchestra, bands, EDM, installation, planetarium domes and hybrid-arts projects. He studied composition under composers Mark Pollard, Julian Yu and Stuart Greenbaum at the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne. His doctoral studies focused on the compositional process and an examined nexus between technology, extra-musical interaction and structural design. He has also spent time at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique / Musique) in Paris studying electronic music.
Lyons has had compositions performed, recorded and broadcast in Australia and internationally. His compositional style pursues beauty of line, sonority and site-specific context, drawing from both popular and art music traditions. Electronic and sampled elements feature in many of his compositions and reveal an interest in pulse, loop-based structures, drones, beats, glitch and microsound elements. He embraces multiple modes of making and is drawn to the inner worlds of sound and connections to memory, sonority and place. As an active researcher and performer of electronic, audio-visual and electroacoustic composition, his work has been featured in festivals and conferences such as the Matera Intermedia Digital Arts Festival in Italy, the Porto/Post/Doc Film & Media Festival in Portugal, the Zèppelin Ars Electroacustica in Spain, the Melbourne International Film Festival, and the ICMC International Computer Music Conference.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is a frequent part of the creative output of Dr Lyons. He has collaborated extensively with Victorian regional poets as part of the Pure Poetry Project working closely with acclaimed poet Nathan Curnow. Audio-visual and installation collaborations with animator Paul Fletcher have been exhibited internationally including Australia, Singapore, Germany, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Other collaborative highlights include the electroacoustic compositions of the Bach/Lyons Project performed in Denmark, and the piano/electronics work Trace Elements devised and performed with Sonya Lifschitz at Melbourne’s ASTRA chamber music concert series as well as with Michael Kieran Harvey at the ICMC/Totally Huge New Music Festival. Lyons has performed with Australia's regarded Syzygy ensemble and has collaborated and performed with the MCM’s New Music Studio, including composing and performing on the rare EMS Synthi 100 synthesiser at the Melbourne Recital Centre. In his duo project with cellist Emily Williams he plays the Buchla Easel synthesiser and electronics, having recently performed live on IMPA Tv in Manchester.
Dr Lyons has been a contributor and reviewer for the Australian Music Centre’s journal Resonate. He has worked with a number of arts, cultural and festival bodies including the Tilde New Music and Sound Art Festival, Creative Victoria, the ARC’s Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, the Grainger Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria. He is a passionate teacher and academic who strives to maximise and focus the unique creative qualities in all his students. He believes in the power of music and art to make a positive difference in the world. He is Lecturer in Interactive Composition in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Melbourne.
