Professor David Amor is a consultant clinical geneticist and clinician scientist with a research focus on human genetics. In 2016 he was appointed to the position of inaugural Pamela and Lorenzo Galli Chair in the Department of Paediatrics, with a specific research and clinical focus on the causes of intellectual and physical disability.Professor Amor trained in paediatrics and clinical genetics before undertaking PhD studies in chromosome biology under the supervision of Professor Andy Choo.

Since 2005 he has worked as a consultant clinical geneticist at Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS) and as a Research Group Leader at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI). From 2009 to 2016 he was Director of Victorian Clinical Genetics Services, the main provider of clinical and laboratory genetic services across Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.Professor Amor has a strong research record in the field of human genetic disease, with focus on identifying genes for rare genetic diseases, genetics of intellectual disability, chromosome disorders, and translation of genetic testing technologies. He has published more than 175 papers on a range of human genetic and medical genetic subjects including: (i) disorders of chromosomes and chromatin, disorders of imprinting, discovery and characterization of rare genetic disorders, (ii) genetics of intellectual disability and neurodisability, (iii) genetic issues relating to IVF, and epidemiological studies relating to genetic conditions, (iv) translation of new genetic testing technologies into clinical use. Professor Amor is a co-author of the 5th edition of the reference text Chromosome Abnormalities and Genetic Counselling (Gardner RJM and Amor DJ, 2017) published by Oxford University Press. Over the last ten years he have been a Chief Investigator on more than $20 million worth of research grants, and currently holds three Project Grants and two Centre for Research Excellence Grants from NHMRC.
