Dr Chin Wee Tan is a senior research fellow at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). Dr Tan completed his BEng (Hons) in Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2003 and moved to Australia in 2006 to undertake a Master of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Dr Tan completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Computational Systems Biology) from the University of Melbourne in 2011.

Dr Tan's early research has revolved around systems biology of colon cancer, utilizing state-of the art imaging technologies, quantitative microscopy, and mathematical modelling approaches to advance the knowledge and treatment of colon cancer. At WEHI Systems Biology Division, Dr Tan led a systems biology team spearheading computational cancer biology research studying colon cancer biology, using 3D quantitative microscopy techniques, computational systems modelling and image analytics of cell-lines and colon organoids mini-gut cultures. These efforts resulted in the development of a platform for image-based colon cancer organoid screening for deploying in any clinical laboratory.

In 2019, Dr Tan moved to the Bioinformatics Division (WEHI) focusing his efforts on computational cancer biology. He has since worked on bioinformatics/computational cancer-related (and now infection diseases) projects as well as commercial drug discovery projects involving analyses of multi-omic data associated with responses to drugs in different cancer models.

Since 2020, Dr Tan has been spearheading the development of novel bioinformatic approaches for spatial datasets for a spectrum of diseases (e.g. lung, myo-cardial) and COVID-19/ SARS-CoV-2 infections. These analyses have now extended to include analysis of new high resolution single molecule spatial technologies like Nanostring CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager (SMI). The latest specialised tool developed for spatial analysis of datasets generated from the Nanostring GeoMx DSP platform is the Bioconductor package standR.
