I graduated from Moscow State Forestry University, Russia with a degree in Forest Engineering. I gained my PhD in plant ecological physiology at the University of Melbourne, Australia studying the impact of changing climate and anthropogenic disturbance on understorey tree health and vitality.
At the completion of my PhD I started a new area of research - environmental impact of forest fires for emission management.

I have expanded this research from temperate forests of Australia to tropical peat swamp forests of Indonesia. My research addresses questions of the impact of natural disturbance, forest management and land use change on forest carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions.
