An enthusiastic teacher, John brings extensive experience in schools to his teaching, research and knowledge partnership work in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. He has taught a wide range of VCE Humanities subjects, as well as Years 7 to 10.
John was also a Teaching Fellow in Medieval History at Monash University. In addition to this, he has considerable experience in educational leadership. John took up his current role in 2004. He works extensively with schools, subject associations, and education authorities.
John’s research interests include history education, curriculum studies and historiography. Recent projects include co-operative learning and discipline-based pedagogy in history. John was founding Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed section of Agora (Sungraphô). He is international consulting editor for Learning and Teaching and a member of the editorial panel of the International Journal of Historical Learning, Teaching and Research.
In recognition of his contribution to education, John was awarded a Fellowship by the Australian College of Educators. Furthermore, John is the recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award (Melbourne Graduate School of Education), the Barbara Falk Award for Teaching Excellence (The University of Melbourne), and a national Award for Teaching Excellence (Australian Learning and Teaching Council).
