Professor Tony Milner studied at Monash University, the University of Malaya and Cornell University. He has held appointments at Monash University, Cornell University, the University of Kent at Canterbury, the Australian National University, the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the National University of Singapore, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the National University of Malaysia, Humboldt University, Kyoto University, the University of Malaya and the Institute for Strategic and International Studies in Malaysia.
At ANU he was Basham Professor of Asian History from 1994 to 2013, and Dean of Asian Studies from 1996 to 2005; he is currently Emeritus Professor at that university, as well as Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Asia Institute and Visiting Professor at the University of Malaya. His main areas of research are Malay history – particularly the history of ideas and political culture – and regional relations (including Australia-Asia relations). He was Director of the Australia-Asia Perceptions Project of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, which produced a three-volume series - ‘Australia in Asia’ - for OUP. His books on Malay and Malaysian history include Kerajaan: Malay Political Culture on the Eve of Colonial Rule (1982), which is to be published in a new edition early in 2016; The Invention of Politics in Colonial Malaya (CUP 1995; 2002); The Malays (Wiley-Blackwell 2008, 2011) and (edited with Tham Siew Yean and Abdul Rahman Embong), Transforming Malaysia: Dominant and Competing Paradigms (ISEAS 2014). Professor Milner’s current research focus – supported by funding from an ARC Project on the ‘Languages of Asia-Pacific Security’ and the Noah Foundation - is the historical foundations of Asian foreign policies.
