Louise Keogh

A/Prof Louise Keogh is a health sociologist, but began her academic life in the Chemistry Department at the University of Western Australia. After graduating and working as a research chemist with a mining company, Louise retrained in sociology by completing a Masters degree in the Sociology department at Monash University.

She then pursued social research in health at La Trobe University and completed her PhD on emergency contraception in the School of Public Health, La Trobe in 2003. Since 2003 Louise has been at the University of Melbourne, and in 2009, Louise took up a continuing teaching and research position in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. She has previously held a National Health and Medical Research Council Scholarship and Post Doctoral Fellowship. Louise specialises in qualitative methodology, risk and technology and her current areas of research include: the decriminalisation of abortion, both intended and untended consequences; the use of genetics in cancer prevention, e.g. tailoring breast screening, population genomic screening, and life insurance discrimination as a barrier to genetic testing. A new area of research she is currently exploring is the place of conscientious objection in health care, in relation to both abortion and voluntary assisted dying. She has taught into the Master of Public Health since 2010, contributes to a number of undergraduate breadth subjects, coordinates Honours in Population and Global Health and currently co-chairs the Academic Programs Committee of the University.
