Dr Whittem has a balanced experience of the veterinary profession including private practice, teaching and research in academe and research and business management in the pharmaceutical industry. While an academic Dr Whittem earned an international reputation for novel approaches to problems in veterinary pharmacokinetics, including the use of mixed effects hierarchical modelling for determination of risk factors for drug residues in milk.

At the University of Illinois and subsequently he also has conducted and published veterinary hospital-based clinical trials. Dr. Whittem's university-based research has been funded by internal and external competitive grants in Australia, New Zealand and USA. Dr Whittem has dedicated effort toward training and evaluation of graduate and clinical specialty veterinarians. He has supervised or supported >20 graduate degree candidates. Dr Whittem served as Chairman of the Examination Committee of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and has three times served as Head Examiner (Fellowship-Pharmacology) for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists Chapter of Pharmacology.

Dr Whittem has current projects evaluating; drug residues in milk, drug residues in racing performance animals, clinical trials in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, and the effect of pharmacokinetics on the rate of development of antimicrobial resistance.
