Dr Carolyn Nickson is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. Dr Nickson holds a joint position as Senior Research Fellow at the Cancer Council NSW, where she leads the 'Pathways – Breast' program.Dr Nickson is a cancer epidemiologist with a background in mathematics, recognised for her expertise in cancer screening evaluation and her novel and multidisciplinary approaches to solving problems in this domain.
She is particularly enthusiastic about multidisciplinary research, working closely with clinicians and scientists to combine skills, ideas and knowledge to generate pertinent research outcomes that make a real difference to policy and practice. Her current projects include:- ‘Optimising Breast Cancer Early Detection in Australia’ , an Australian Government Department of Health project to explore options for risk-based, personalised approaches to breast-cancer screening in Australia.- Health economic modelling of breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment across Australia, using the Policy1-Breast model.- AutoDensity software to routinely measure mammographic density from screening mammograms (in collaboration with the CSIRO)- Supporting the national ‘lifepool’ cohortas well as various projects evaluating the performance of breast cancer screening. Previous projects have included:- Clinical evaluations of digital breast tomosynthesis (in collaboration with Maroondah BreastScreen)- Detailed evaluation of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment practices in Victoria (in collaboration with the Royal Women’s Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital)
