Qinghua obtained the degree of PhD of Architectural History in 1995 from Chalmers University of Technology, one of the leading architectural schools in Sweden, gained the degree of Bachelor of Architecture in 1982 from Harbin University of Technology, ranked among the best universities in China. Before commencing at the University of Melbourne in 1997, Qinghua was a researcher (1982-6) and senior researcher (1987-9) at the Institute of Architectural History, Beijing, China (the only national research institute set up to explore Chinese architecture), where Qinghua carried out various projects, research into historical buildings and townships as well as restoration and conservation.

Between 1995 and 1997, Qinghua worked as a foundation researcher in the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University, Japan, where she undertook two research projects: conservation philosophy and technology; and structures and techniques of multi-storeyed wooden pagodas.
