SENIOR LECTURER/ COURSE COORDINATOR MNSc NURSING (ENTRY-TO-PRACTICE)Dr Zerina Lokmic Tomkins is a clinician-scientist with a strong interdisciplinary focus spanning tissue engineering, immunology and outcomes for children and adults diagnosed with vascular anomalies and vascular cancers. Her expertise combines cell biology of vascular biology in health, disease and in tissue engineering to a clinical focus on patient-partnered research in this space.

Zerina received her doctorate in tissue engineering in 2005 from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Surgery. She completed post-doctoral training at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry at the University of Munster, Germany under mentorship of Prof Lydia Sorokin in the filed of immunology. Since returning to Australia, Zerina has been a part of multi-disciplinary team at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne led by Prof Tony Penington and Prof Rod Phillips where she provides strong research support for the growing vascular anomalies research program. Zerina's interdisciplinary research interests are focused on four areas:a) understanding the underlying causes of vascular anomalies and vascular cancers and how the presentation of these conditions impact patients and their families;b) long term outcomes in survivors including long-term surveillance, ethical and social issues through patient-partnered research; c) development of vascularised tissue engineering products for transplantation; d) the use of electronic medical records on improving the quality of healthcare delivery to disadvantaged communities.
