Dr Kate Filia is a Research Fellow at Orygen, the Centre for Youth Mental Health, building a program of research regarding social inclusion and mental health. Kate’s research focusses on improving understanding about the role of social inclusion in the prevention, treatment and ongoing management of mental ill-health, particularly in early stages for young people.

She is particularly interested in the interplay between aspects of social inclusion (social functioning, vocational engagement, housing, community involvement, and finances) and clinical outcomes, and aims to identify which aspects of social inclusion are most modifiable, malleable and responsive to intervention, in order to aid in protecting long-term outcomes.

Kate is also the Research Program Manager of the Health Services and Outcomes Research team, responsible for overseeing a number of NHMRC-funded projects, including a cohort study of people who accessed early psychosis treatment >15 years earlier, a randomised controlled trial of a psychological intervention for early stage bipolar disorder, and a program aiming to improve outcome measurement and evaluation of early mental health support services.

Kate was awarded her PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2015. She has obtained a number of early career awards and grants, and is currently the recipient of a Melbourne Research Fellowship (Career Interruptions) from the University of Melbourne.
