Ingrid Winship

Ingrid Winship is a clinician scientist and is the Inaugural Chair of Adult Clinical Genetics at the University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Her career has combined clinical practice, biomedical research and the translation of research into practice and policy.

While she works across many domains within clinical genetics, her research interests have been focused on colorectal cancer, and in particular the potential for cancer prevention. She has used the knowledge generated by her and other’s research to optimise and implement state of the art clinical genetic services in adult medicine, with a focus on familial cancer and cancer prevention. She is an expert in heritable skin disorders. As Melbourne Health’s Executive Director of Research (2006-2018) she facilitated the embedding of research into clinical practice in this large academic teaching hospital and established the Clinical Trials Centre on the city campus. She is a practicing clinician, providing academic and clinical leadership in the inherited cancer clinics. She served on a number of high level committees within Australia, and internationally; she is currently a Director of the Boards of the Australian Genome Research Facility and Global Variome. She is Chair of the Australian Health Ethics Committee and a member of the NHMRC Council. In June 2020, Professor Winship was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for "distinguished service to medicine, particularly to clinical genetics and research, to cancer prevention, and as a role model and mentor."
