Dr Melissa Russell is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology at the Centre of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the School of Population and Global Health. Melissa initially trained in physiotherapy and in 2008 she completed her PhD through the through the University of Melbourne and the National Ageing Research Institute.
Since graduating Melissa has continued to work with the National Ageing Research Institute investigating the mental health benefits of physical activity and has expanded her interest in physical activity and mental health through a variety of research projects at the University of Melbourne. More specifically, Melissa is currently working with both local and international collaborators investigating the effects of physical activity on childhood and adult asthma and lung health. She undertakes this research through the Allergy and Lung Health Unit at the Centre of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. In addition to her research activities Melissa has been involved in the education of students in physiotherapy, epidemiology and public health over the course of her career. Melissa is the Course Coordinator for the Master of Public Health and the Head of the Centre of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Teaching Unit. She currently coordinates the subject 'Epidemiology 3' within the Master of Public Health and Master of Epidemiology. In-line with her interest in mental health and education Melissa is involved in a research project investigating University of Melbourne student well-being and is currently undertaking work to enhance the experience of international students in the Master of Public Health.
