Dr Gorfine is a fisheries biologist with four decades of technical and scientific research experience in temperate marine ecosystems in south-eastern Australia and overseas. Much of his expertise is in the assessment of invertebrate dive fisheries and development of harvest strategies, but more recently he has been investigating vertebrate fish stocks.
A common theme in his research is the acquisition of data and its objective analysis to support evidence-based decisions about future management strategies. Current work includes stock status assessment of non-quota fisheries in Victoria, and analysis of stocks in the Bohai and Yellow Seas of China, and in Curonian Lagoon and Kaunas Reservoir in Lithuania. His focus is on the substantial changes in environmental drivers that are causing shifts in biological processes, population dynamics, ecological interactions, and increasing threats to sustainability from over-exploitation. His collaborative overseas research aims to shed light on aspects of these processes with an over-arching goal of promoting improved food security from adaptive management of fisheries and supporting ecosystems. He is a member of the Resource Modeling Association and was the principal organiser of the 2014 World Conference of Natural Resource Modeling. Dr Gorfine is also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Zoology and Ecology published by the Lithuanian Nature Research Centre. He has also undertaken consultancies in Oman and USA, and has experience co-supervising successful doctoral candidates at several universities in Australia and overseas.
