Dr. Bree Jones is a dental academic and researcher with expertise spanning public health, diagnostic innovation, AI, education, and sustainability. She holds a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Oral Health, a Graduate Certificate in Dental Therapy (Advanced Practice), a Master of Public Health, and a PhD.

Her PhD, undertaken with the Inflammatory Origins Research Group at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, focused on validating 3D intraoral imaging for early disease detection and developing deep learning models for automated caries detection in children. Her work was supported by a competitive industry scholarship.

Bree is a Senior Lecturer and Final Year Coordinator in the Bachelor of Oral Health program, and teaches across the Bachelor of Oral Health and Doctor of Dental Surgery Programs. She has a special interest in curriculum design and development and has held leadership roles in this space since 2013. Her previous experience includes serving as Project Officer for the national Oral Health Graduate Year Program and Head of the Bachelor of Oral Health at Holmesglen (Charles Sturt University). In 2021, she was awarded a Faculty teaching award for her work integrating advanced clinical scope of practice into the Bachelor of Oral Health Program. She is currently co-leading the curriculum modernisation of the Bachelor of Oral Health alongside A/Prof Roisin McGrath, Ms. Claire Mustchin, A/Prof Clare McNally, and A/Prof Samantha Byrne.

Bree teaches clinical dentistry and environmentally sustainable dentistry, and she delivers education to final-year students on the responsible and safe use of AI in clinical practice.

She co-leads the Dentistry, Data and AI Research Group at the Melbourne Dental School, supporting interdisciplinary research into:

Diagnostic validation of AI technologies.
Ethical AI integration in dentistry.
Human-AI interaction and its impact on dentistry education.

Bree is a Working Group Member of the ITU/WHO FG-AI4H Topic Group on Dental Diagnostics and Digital Dentistry, contributing to international guidelines on AI benchmarking, ethics, dataset curation, and global collaboration to improve oral health outcomes.

She aligns her research interests closely with curriculum development and teaching. Her research is grounded in real-world clinical problems and is tightly integrated with her pedagogy, ensuring students are exposed to emerging tools, technologies, and sustainable practices. She is committed to advancing both the science and delivery of oral healthcare through innovation, evidence-based education, and workforce development.
