Dr. Chana is a Senior Research Fellow within the Department of Medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of the Integrative Biological Psychiatry Laboratory at the Centre for Neural Engineering (CfNE). In addition, he is an honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.

Dr. Chana completed his Ph.D. in 2005 at the Institute of Psychiatry that focused on "Cortico-thalamic Abnormalities in Patients with Major Psychiatric Disorders". Following this he carried out post-doctoral training at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Chana’s principle research background is the neuropathological investigation of major psychiatric disorders. His group utilises immunohistochemistry, microscopy and 3D stereology as well as in vitro and molecular biological approaches to investigate the underlying causes of autism and schizophrenia, including investigation of gene expression changes elicited by psychotropic medications. While at UCSD and following membership to the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program (HNRP) he also conducted research into the molecular neuropathogenesis of HIV associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). His current research interests lie in investigating the role of the glutamatergic system and neuroinflammation in the pathophysiology of autism as well as collaborative neural engineering projects at the CfNE involving the incorporation of nanotechnology and electrochemical detection.
