My role as Foundation Chair of Anaesthesia at The University of Melbourne is to support research, teaching, and engagement in anaesthesia, perioperative and pain medicine in the 14 University-affiliated hospitals. I have two particular streams of research around perioperative care of high-risk patients.
The first clinical stream includes strategies to reduce complications, particularly in the postoperative period. The second translational stream examines acid-base disorders and the underlying pathophysiology. I am Deputy Director of the Centre for Integrated Critical Care (CICC) within the Melbourne Medical School and Associate Director of the Melbourne Academic Centre for Health (MACH). My clinical work is based at Austin Health, where I am a part time staff anaesthetist.
