Ruth is an honorary Associate Professor in the Department of General Practice, and a general practitioner in an inner urban clinic in Melbourne. She has clinical and research interests in lesbian and bisexual women’s mental health, sexual health, same-sex parenting, health care access, health care provider cultural competence training, and cultural issues related to alcohol and smoking, and homelessness in the LGBT communities.

She chaired the Human Research Ethics Group at the Department of General Practice in the past and has undertaken training in ethical research methods. She is the Co-Chairperson of the Victorian LGBTI Health and Human Services Working group and a member of the LGBTI Taskforce (2015-2019), advising on LGBTI health policy and practice. She has been on successive Victorian Ministerial Advisory Committees on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Health and Wellbeing from 2000 to 2014. This role included the development of a guide for publicly funded health services on LGBTI inclusive practice, Well Proud, which has been revised as an online resource in 2016. She is a founding member and previous Convener of the Australian Lesbian Medical Association, and is Chairperson of the Pride Foundation Australia. Ruth became a Member of the Order of Australia at the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2019, for significant service to medicine, and as an advocate for the LGBTIQ community. She was inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2017 in recognition of her national and international standing in research, education and community advocacy.
