An NHMRC Public Health Training Fellow, Dr Fowkes is Head of the Malaria and Infectious Disease Epidemiology group at the Burnet Institute and an honorary fellow of Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.

She is involved primarily in examining the epidemiology of malaria and in particular immunology, host genetics and susceptibility to malaria and associated morbidities.

In 2002 she obtained an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, completing her doctorate in 2007 at the University of Oxford. After completing post-docs at New York University School of Medicine and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute she joined the Burnet Institute in 2011.
