Dr Hemant R Ojha’s research focuses on exploring policy and institutional options that work for both local communities and environmental sustainability. He articulates multilevel governance and explores modalities of civic engagement for democratizing environmental governance.

He has also worked on conceptualizing the links between local communities and local governance. His research engages a wide range social theories including deliberative governance, public policy, local democracy, and adaptive collaborative approaches, social learning, and paticipatory action research. He also brings rich practical and policy expereinces priori to joining academia from Asia and Africa. He has worked in Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Cameroon, the UK, and Australia. He is the co-founder and former chair of ForestAction Nepal (2000), and the founding chair of Southasia Institute of Advanced Studies (2011). He is also an honorary Senior Fellow at University of Melbourne. His book Adaptive Collaborative Approaches in Natural Resource Governance (2013) has recently come out of Routledge.
