Associate Professor Jacqueline Dutton is Head of Languages and Convenor of French Studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics. She is a leading researcher and writer on French culture and identity, specialising in literature, food, wine, travel and utopia as intercultural products of regional, national and international geopolitics.

She has published widely in all of these areas, ranging from a monograph in French on the representations of utopia in the work of 2008 Nobel Prize Laureate JMG Le Clézio: Le Chercheur d'or et d'ailleurs: L'Utopie de JMG Le Clézio (2003) to a co-edited book on Wine, Terroir and Utopia: Making New Worlds (2019 - with PJ Howland).

Her current book project on the cultural history of wine in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne demonstrates that wars, religion, trade, colonisation, individual characters and personal connections were just as important as geography in making these wine regions the international icons they are today. She is also working with a global team of experts to curate and edit a key reference text for Routledge The Wine and Culture Handbook with over 50 chapters offering interdisciplinary approaches to studying and understanding wine cultures.

Invitations to speak about her research at the Cité du vin in Bordeaux, the UNESCO Chair of Traditions and Cultures of Wine at the Rencontres du Clos Vougeot in Burgundy, and the Rendez-vous de Bacchus at the University of Reims in Champagne have provided opportunities for further intellectual and public engagement internationally.

Jackie is also President of the Australian Association for Literary Translation and Trustee and Board Member of the Irrawaddy Literary Festival in Myanmar.
