Dr Simmons' research focusses on how the environments we grow up interact with our biology to influence risk (and protection) for mental health disorders, and particularly depressive and anxiety disorders. He works with children, adolescents and their families to explore these interactions, as well as adult clinical and community populations.

He has a particular interest in working with disadvantaged populations to understand more about how experience gets under the skin to worsen health outcomes, such that we may be able to improve early identification, prevention and intervention strategies. Current work includes investigation interactions with the oral and faecal microbiomes, and endocrine function.Dr Simmons current projects include:- Victorian Oral Microbiome and Lifestyle Study- Bugs and Brains: The Gut and Mental Health Study- Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood Study- Emotion, Learning and Memory Study
