Katy Abbott

Dr. Katy Abbott (1971) is a proudly Australian composer whose music draws on her training as a classical composer and a contemporary musician.

Abbott’s music seeks to respond to the situations and environments that she experiences and to share these experiences with her audience through music.

Her catalogue is varied including numerous works for orchestras, chamber ensembles (including live looping) and vocal music. Having lived in Malaysia and Dubai, her writing often reflects on concepts of home, place, humour and connection.

Abbott is a passionate educator, musical story-teller. Her works for young people include The Peasant Prince commissioned by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Introduced Species commissioned by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Katy Abbott studied with Brenton Broadstock and Linda Kouvaras at University of Melbourne, completing her PhD in 2008. Her work is programmed regularly throughout Australia and overseas.
