Dr He Joined The University of Melbourne as Research at Melbourne Accelerator Program (RAMAP) Professor of Molecular Soil Ecology in December 2013. His research interests focus on the soil microbial biogeography and biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in soil ecosystems.

His research employs advanced bio-molecular and physicochemical approaches to understand the distribution and diversity of microbial communities in soils, and the processes and mechanisms of microbes-mediated C, N and other elemental cycling.

Before joining the University of Melbourne, Dr. He was Professor and Head of Department of Environmental Soil Science in the Research Centre for Eco-environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing.

Dr. He has published more than 200 peer reviewed papers in international journals and these papers have been cited over 12000 times with H index of 58 (https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=-imbQnEAAAAJ&hl=en). He is listed as Highly Cited Researchers in 2018 & 2019 by Web of Science. He serves international journals as Subject editor/ associate editor for Journal of Soils & Sediments and Soil Research, as editorial board member for FEMS Microbiology Ecology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology etc. He serves ARC College of Experts (2019-2020) and is grant reviewer for funding bodies in China, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and European Commission etc.
