Richard received a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Sydney after which he worked in mixed animal practice for three years. He then undertook graduate studies in diagnostic pathology at the University of Queensland as well as obtaining a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) cultivating and characterizing canine hemangiosarcomas invitro.

After a tour of duty as a pathologist at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Queensland) he commenced work as a diagnostician at IDEXX Laboratories, Brisbane. He attained Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Pathobiology in 2004. He spent a total of 12 years at IDEXX during which he was granted a leave of absence to spend time on Faculty at The University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. He left the commercial world in 2014 joining the diagnostic team at the University of Melbourne, Werribee. After leaving the University he had another brief soiree with the commercial world at ASAP Laboratories before he and his family headed off to the wild plains of Texas. He spent nearly two years on Faculty at Texas A and M University and this culminated in ACVP certification in 2018. He remains an adjunct faculty member at Texas A and M. He returned to IDEXX Laboratories in Melbourne last September. He is excited about his new role at the University of Melbourne. Richard is a professional diagnostician with a real passion for teaching. He strongly believes in the importance of a good grounding in pathology to the development of a competent clinician. Richard’s experience makes him an expert in surgical pathology but he also has a real passion for gross pathology. His special interest area is hematopoietic disease but also has a strong interest in exotic and wildlife pathology with an emerging passion for diseases of reptiles.
